Paradice, you are becoming my Muse :)
I wrote a post about the electronic voting,as a comment field did not do my reply justice. I am not suggesting that the government should exist exclusively online just making a point that broadband access for everyone is one of the key factors to enable development. I believe that even the US will get 100% broadband coverage one day and that voting will be done electronically. Might take a decade, but I cannot see any other evolutionary path.

With that I'm sure will come extreme problems; in the United States, our electronic voting machines have been tampered with to alter the outcome, surely that will be increased if the government infrastructure goes online.
Honestly, I haven't a clue what I'm saying, but I do not think it's the safest thing for the government to function primarily online. There are people out there that would be pleased to exploit their systems and files. It could start the world's first online war! -.-

But, I don't think this will be coming to America anytime soon. Far too many people, for one. And I'm sure if it ever did happen, the shared broadband or whatever would be extremely slow.

Good point Paradice. Almost everyone has access to a computer, and the access to a decent broadband correlates to the spread of computers. It is not only a case of "if you build it, they will come", but todays western society needs broadband to function.
In a nation, where broadband is actually reaching everyone, the government infrastructure can be build expecting that everyone can participate via online interfaces. Regulatory bodies can inform citizens solely via the net. Voting could be done exclusively online.

Wow, I did not know that! Extremely interesting. But what would the point of Finland making it law to provide everyone with broadband if not everyone has access to a computer?
